India is a culture-rich country. We have the 2nd biggest army, the 6th biggest economy, and the 7th largest country in the world. In one word we proved ourselves in every field, despite being a 3rd world country. So why should we lag behind when it comes to fashion and style sense. We have some great scope to lead the world of fashion too. Talking about our sense of creativity and style, Yes, there is hope. It’s not that difficult to become fashionable and presentable.
It takes some time to grow a sense of style. So, just start implementing the basics of fashion to your wardrobe first. Never hesitate to experiment something new within your league. Because this is the point from where your fashion and style sense starts developing. So here are some mistakes that most of us Indian men do, when it comes to our style game.
Lack of Confidence :
Confidence is the key to look good. No matter what you are wearing, if you have confidence then you’ll totally carry the outfit. So how do you grow confidence in you? Very simple, you should invest in a big mirror. All you need to do is just see yourself every day in the mirror and question yourself how do you look? You’ll find your answer. Give yourself some pep-talks, and put time into dressing up. Remember only your confidence can overcome the lack of Fashion and style sense in you.
Dilemma With Colors :
We see Indian people looking all colorful in Hollywood movies, but that’s not the case. Most Indian men hesitate to try many colors. Firstly, you should know which colors look good on you rather than what you like. Whenever you are shopping for apparel, just think of what you are going to pair it with. If you end up bringing too many colors to your outfit, you can end up looking like a clown!. So be wise while picking your colors and use your fashion and style sense. Decide what you like, bright colors, monochromatic, pastels or neutrals, and choose accordingly.
Not Dressing Appropriately :
The first rule of Fashion is to dress according to the occasion. You need to dress appropriately, whether it’s for a party or a meeting. For example, if you are going for an interview and don’t know what to wear, go for something formal and in neutral shades. If you are going to a party, wear a leather jacket or a blazer, with shoes. Most Indian men end up wearing slippers to office or sandals to parties, these are all symptoms of Fashion Ignorance. Dress appropriately to the event and you’re good to go. It helps to shop, based on the occasion, you can find respective categories in the shops too.
Overdoing Your Outfit :
“Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication”- Leonardo da Vinci. We are not talking about Indian ethnic clothes which are highly exaggerated and has intricate ultimate craftsmanship. That is the essence of Ethnic wear and it is appropriate to the function. However, we are talking in specific to western attire, which requires more work. You can layer your outfit all you want, but don’t layer it with too many things that may not be necessary to the look. Fusion wear is only good when kept simple. You can team a Nehru jacket with a western look, but don’t overdo it and spoil it.
Lack of knowledge :
Unfortunately, most of us Indian men are ignorant when it comes to the runway fashion. We spend thousands on branded labels but don’t spare a minute to understand the latest trends. But in order to grow your fashion and style sense, you should gather some knowledge on the latest style trends. And what could be a better source than the internet? There are a number of online sources too or you can just google it. Once you equip yourself with the latest trends and styles, you can shop better.
Less Focus on Grooming :
Last but definitely not the least is grooming, which is very essential to all men, not just Indian men. Men in India often have the misconception that grooming is for women, but in today’s world where everyone is exposed to harmful sun rays, pollution, and dust, we should all take care of our skin. Hence Grooming, here are a few essentials you need to pay attention to :
Hair & beard :
Hair & beard are the first things that people notice in a Man. So they should be kept properly groomed. Doesn’t matter what hairstyle you have, you should always keep it set and regularly cut or trimmed. And coming to the beard, always keep it trimmed neatly. Because no one likes a caveman.
Skin & Nails :
Well maintained skin is not only looking good, but it feels good too. Taking special care of your skin can also prevent aging and other skin damage protection. In India, the weather is a bit harsh so you should always take care of your skin (body & face) Use sun protection, or night masks or peels. Always remember to cleanse, moisturize and tone. And your nails should be neatly clipped, just as your hair should be trimmed.
Body odor :
Because of the hot and humid weather in most places in India, you can often sweat and smell bad. So make sure you always carry a pocket perfume in order to smell good and fresh. Don’t miss on taking regular baths, to avoid bad body odor. Use a musk or men’s deodorant, a man’s fragrance is the first thing a woman catches. And only when you smell good, will you feel good.
These are a few things holding us, Indian men back, when it comes to standing tall in the Fashion forefront. Of course, it won’t happen overnight but gradually you can make you the best version of yourself. When you do, you will start loving it, because this is the version, you always wanted to be. And always remember the 21/90 rule, which is “It takes 21 days to make a habit and 90 days to make a lifestyle”. Once you master your Fashion and style sense, it becomes a part of your lifestyle, there’s no stopping you.
